Coding with Scratch – Create Awesome Platform Games

5 stars
Bought for my 9 year old as an introduction to Scratch. She was able to get going independently and absolutely loves seeing the results of what she’s done. Starts with really simple programs to get some quick wins and keep up motivation. Great book 🙂

Coding with HTML & JavaScript – Create Epic Computer Games

5 stars
This book is an excellent way to introduce children to coding with HTML and JavaScript. It is easy to read and understand, and provides a great foundation for kids to start creating their own computer games. The step-by-step instructions make it simple to follow and the hands-on approach makes it fun. The QuestKids series of books is a great way to get kids interested in coding and this book is a great starting point. Highly recommended!

Laptops for Seniors in easy steps, 8th edition

5 stars
Normally, any computing issues or questions that I may have had I had to ask my grandchildren for answers however, this book has, in effect, replaced them and I don’t have to give the book pocket money.
It is very well written, very easy to understand and assumes no previous knowledge. The illustrations are clear and informative. If you’re not of the IT generation and you want to get online or need to speak the same language as your grandchildren, this is the book for you.

Coding with Scratch – Create Fantastic Driving Games

5 stars
This book understands how to teach! The games you end up with are also fun to play (even for adults). My son is very keen on scratch, so I’ve bought him a few books over the years. Some are dire, with content out of order/missing and things poorly explained. For these previous purchases my son just ended up copying the code without learning much, and often ending up with a project that didn’t work! But not so for this book! Every project is simply laid out, with explanations of every step in the code. The games you end up with are fun and very customizable. Along with “code club book of scratch: volume 1” this is a book my son really got something out of.

Chromebooks in easy steps

5 stars
Very impressed with this book. It leads the reader through the use of Chromebooks in a sensible and gradual progression, with highlighted tips along the way. It’s well laid out and contains both a contents list and an index making it easy to dip in and out as required. For the new user, my advice would simply be to read the book sequentially from start to finish. A well presented book that comes at a reasonable cost.

C++ Programming in easy steps, 6th edition

5 stars
An excellent book for beginners, due to its very specific format and style.
The layout is very pleasant : clear and breathing, with colours and highlights, clear and simple style.
Instead of lengthy and tedious developments around a piece of listing like many (all ?) other books, each concept is explained and illustrated over a double page, through a piece of code constructed step by step. That proves very efficient and pleasant for easy and quick progress.
Of course with 185 pages only you do not have all of C++ , and the format becomes too tight for complex topics, especially for the last lessons which provide more a recipe to reproduce than an understanding for creating by your own. This book needs to be completed by another source going deeper.
However I definitely recommend for beginners, as it makes you quickly autonomous over a very wide range of programming, and does give you the desire to broaden your knowledge and understanding of C++.
