How to use Baseline Shift and Horizontal & Vertical Scale in InDesign

To use Baseline Shift

A baseline is an imaginary line that runs along the base of text characters. It is an important concept when talking about typography. Use Baseline Shift to move highlighted characters above or below their original baseline.

Use the Type tool to highlight the characters you want to baseline-shift. Enter a new value in the Baseline Shift entry field in the Control panel, the Character panel or the Character pane of the Properties panel, then press Enter/Return to apply the change. Positive values shift characters upward; negative values shift characters downward.

To use Horizontal and Vertical Scale

Use horizontal and vertical scaling controls to expand or condense selected characters. Although not strictly as good as using a true condensed font, these controls can sometimes be useful when working with headlines and when creating special effects with type. The default value for both Horizontal and Vertical Scale is 100%.

To scale type horizontally or vertically, first use the Type tool to select a range of text. Enter a new value (1.0–1000) in the entry field in the Control panel or the Character panel. Press Enter/Return to apply the change. Alternatively, use the Vertical/Horizontal pop-up menus to choose from the preset list, or click the arrows (  ) to adjust the vertical/horizontal scaling in 1% steps.
