How to use Copilot to add formulas to your Excel spreadsheet

Using Copilot in Excel is a new feature in Microsoft 365. It can be used for tasks such as writing formulas. To get started with Copilot in Excel:

 

1)  Open an existing worksheet or create a new blank one. Click on the down-pointing arrowhead on the Copilot icon on the Ribbon:

2)  Click on the Chat option to access the general Copilot chat function:

3)  The Message Copilot query box can be used to start a new conversation with Copilot about Excel:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

4)  The boxes below the Message Copilot query box contain suggestions for new queries.

 

 

Green items in the boxes below the query box do not appear when an item is added to the query box, and need to be added manually.

 

5)  Click on one of the options in Step 4 to add it as a prompt in the Message Copilot query box:

6)  Complete the prompt as required; e.g. if it is for a formula, add the relevant details:

7)  Click on the Send (green arrow) button to apply the prompt. Copilot displays the result below the Message Copilot query box:

 

8)  Scroll down the Copilot panel to view more details about the answer. If required, click on the Add to cell button to add the result to a worksheet:

 

 

 

 

 

 

9)  Scroll further down the panel to view more options relating to the answer. Click on one of these to add it to the Message Copilot query box:
